Ancient California redwoods are the main attraction of the damp, pristine pathways at Muir Woods (415-388-7059), part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Within the 550-acre forest, the famed sequoias tower up to 260 feet above the hiking trails. Located 30 minutes north of San Francisco, the woods attract plenty of nature lovers. Bring your walking shoes and troop down a trail — you'll soon find your own piece of Northern California paradise. Even wheelchairs can be accommodated. Admission is $3, and while there’s no picnicking (or dogs), there’s a nice café at the entrance.
