The Baltimore Ravens' injury-plagued secondary sustained another hurt Thursday when starting cornerback Domonique Foxworth was lost for the season after tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament during a non-contact drill.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh announced the injury after Friday morning's practice at McDaniel College.
"I was just running and tried to change directions, something I've done a million times in my career, and this time it just didn't work," said Foxworth, wearing a knee brace and walking on crutches Friday afternoon at the team hotel. "It wasn't anything hard and nothing happened abnormal. It happened on grass, so I can't blame it on turf.
"It didn't really hurt. After a few minutes on the ground I hopped up and tried to walk it off, which wasn't the smartest thing to do. Then I went inside and tried to be upbeat and optimistic, telling everybody I was going to be OK. Then we got the images and they told me a different story."
Foxworth was entering his second season with the Ravens. He was fourth on the team with 62 tackles and intercepted four passes last season, both career highs.
Since November the Ravens have seen three other key defensive backs go down with injuries. Cornerbacks Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb are returning from a torn ACL and a knee injury, respectively.Six-time Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed is recovering from offseason hip surgery and is expected to miss at least six games.
"He's disappointed about it," Harbaugh said of Foxworth's injury. "Nobody's worked harder than he has to get ready for the season and we were counting on him. But I can't wait to see who steps up, I can't wait to see who it is that we're all talking about a month from now that's stepped up to fill that spot.
